History came to life in our classroom this week! As part of our Presidents’ Day activity, students had the unique opportunity to interview President George Washington himself.
A big thank you to seventh grader Brady Beecroft, who suited up and stepped into the role to help make the experience truly meaningful for our class. And in 7th period, fifth grader Ben Good also rose to the occasion, dressing as President Washington and bringing even more presidential presence to the room! 👏
For the past two weeks, our students have been diving deep into a biographical study of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, learning about leadership, character, and the lasting impact both presidents had on our nation.
There’s nothing better than seeing students engage with history in a hands-on, memorable way. Safe to say… the Founding Father would be proud! 🇺🇸✨

Jaden shared his powerful story of resilience after being paralyzed from a tackle during a football game — a moment that changed his life forever. What could have been defined as tragedy has instead become a testimony of strength, courage, and unwavering determination.
Our students heard firsthand what it means to face adversity, to redefine your purpose, and to choose perseverance over bitterness. Jaden’s message went far beyond football. He spoke about gratitude, mindset, family, faith, and the importance of supporting one another — lessons that reach far beyond the field and into everyday life.
Disability Awareness Week is about more than understanding physical differences — it’s about empathy, inclusion, and recognizing the strength in every individual. Jaden’s story reminded us that challenges do not define us… how we respond to them does.
Thank you, Jaden, for your vulnerability, your honesty, and for inspiring the Hurricanes to lead with compassion and resilience. 💙💛

This week in Physical Education, our students had the opportunity to “Walk in Their Shoes” as part of Disability Awareness Week. Through meaningful discussion and hands-on participation in Adaptive Gym activities, students experienced how physical education can be modified to ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate, compete, and succeed.
Adaptive PE helps meet the needs of students of all abilities by adjusting equipment, rules, and activities — promoting inclusion, empathy, and understanding. Our students not only learned about different physical challenges individuals may face, but they also gained a deeper appreciation for perseverance, teamwork, and accessibility.
Experiences like these help build compassion, awareness, and a stronger school community. We are proud of our students for fully engaging in this important learning opportunity.

Today, students in Mr. Schock’s 7th Grade English/Language Arts classes traded their desks for the courtroom as they participated in an exciting mock trial experience. After carefully examining the evidence, hearing arguments, and deliberating like true jurors, all four classes delivered the same verdict — not guilty!
Who knows? We may have just witnessed the early days of some future attorneys, judges, and legal minds in the making. 👩⚖️👨⚖️
A special thank you goes out to Attorney BJ Evans of Fanelli, Evans & Patel for sharing his expertise and guiding our students through this authentic learning opportunity. Experiences like these bring classroom lessons to life and inspire our students to think critically, communicate confidently, and collaborate effectively.
👏 Great work, Hurricanes!

On Tuesday, a group of Schuylkill Haven Area Middle School students traveled to the IU29 MakerSpace to put their coding skills and imagination to the test. Using Hummingbird kits, shoeboxes, and a variety of STEM supplies, students designed and programmed interactive scenes entirely of their own creation.
From the magic of Hogwarts 🪄 to high-energy disco parties 🕺 and relaxing beach escapes 🌊, each project showcased impressive innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving. We are proud of these young creators for representing SHAMS so well and proving that the future of STEM is bright! 👏

Join us as we recognize Disability Awareness Week, February 17–20. Throughout the week, students and staff are encouraged to participate in themed days that promote awareness, inclusion, and respect for individuals of all abilities.
By learning more about one another and celebrating what makes each person unique, we continue to build a school culture where everyone feels seen, valued, and supported.
Let’s show our Hurricane pride by dressing up, lifting each other up, and reminding one another that everyone belongs at SHAMS.

The Schuylkill Haven Area Middle School will utilize a Flexible Instruction Day (FID) for Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

Dear Hurricane Family,
The weather forecast is calling for a significant winter storm to impact our area next week. In preparation, the district administrative team met yesterday to develop a comprehensive plan focused on student and staff safety, instructional delivery, snow-clearing procedures, virtual learning schedules, and the availability of our campus to support the community in the event of widespread power outages.
At this time, if school is closed on Monday, it would constitute our third traditional snow day, which would be made up later this spring. Should winter weather conditions persist or worsen as predicted, the district may begin utilizing Flexible Instruction Days (FID) as early as Tuesday, in accordance with our approved plan through the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Additional details and guidance will be communicated as decisions are made.
Our top priority remains safety, and we will continue to monitor conditions closely while making decisions as early as possible to allow families and staff time to plan. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate what could be one of the most challenging winter storms in years.
Finally, I want to extend a special thank you to our custodial and maintenance teams. They have done an outstanding job all winter long and are once again preparing for what may be their largest storm yet. Their dedication and hard work behind the scenes do not go unnoticed. Please continue to watch for district communications in the coming days. Stay safe and take care of one another.
Sincerely,
Shawn T. Fitzpatrick, Ed.D
