Schuylkill Haven Area School District Announces New Programs, Staffing, and Initiatives for 2025–26
Schuylkill Haven, PA – August 2025 – The Schuylkill Haven Area School District is preparing for an exciting 2025–26 school year with new academic programs, expanded staffing, and initiatives designed to strengthen student learning and success across all grade levels.
“It has been a busy summer of preparation,” said Dr. Shawn T. Fitzpatrick, Superintendent of Schools. “We welcomed nearly 20 new staff members and focused our professional development on student engagement and growth mindset through a program called Total Experience Learning. These investments ensure our teachers and staff are equipped to provide students with meaningful, impactful learning experiences.”
Early Literacy Expansion
At the elementary level, the district will fully implement HMH Into Reading in grades K–2 following a successful pilot in the 2024–25 school year. The program will continue to be piloted in third grade, with plans for full implementation across K–4 in the near future.
Aligned with the Science of Reading, the series emphasizes structured, research-based practices in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. High-quality texts and targeted skill development provide support for all learners, ensuring every child develops the foundational literacy skills needed to become a confident reader.
Middle School: New Faces, Facilities, and Programs
We’re excited to welcome several new faces and programs to our Schuylkill Haven Area Middle School team this year! In addition to these wonderful additions, our 3rd-floor classrooms are now equipped with updated HVAC systems to ensure a more comfortable learning environment, with full system implementation expected early this fall.
The Middle School is also proud to announce the launch of a new Child Development Program, where 6th grade students will have the opportunity to earn certification in the nationally recognized Safe Sitter Program as well as First Aid and CPR. Funding for this program was made possible through the generosity of the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania, with EITC donations provided by First Citizens Community Bank.
“These opportunities reflect our commitment to preparing students not just academically, but personally,” said Dr. Fitzpatrick. “We want our graduates to leave Schuylkill Haven with confidence in both the classroom and in life.”
High School: New Leadership
At the high school, the district is pleased to introduce Mrs. Mikki McGinty as the new Dean of Students, a role focused on attendance and discipline. This position will allow for a more proactive, student-centered approach to maintaining a positive learning environment.
Mrs. McGinty succeeds Mr. Dennis Siket, who has transitioned into an expanded district-level role overseeing operations, athletics, activities, and facility usage.
Growing for Good: Horticulture and Hydroponics
Another initiative the district is proud to expand is horticulture education through the use of hydroponic towers. With two units in each school building, students will engage in every stage of the growing process for vegetables and flowers.
“Our goal is to donate the food we grow to local food banks, giving families access to fresh produce,” Dr. Fitzpatrick said. “It’s a hands-on learning experience that not only teaches science and sustainability but also reinforces the importance of giving back to our community.”
Commitment to Student Success
From early literacy initiatives to new life-skills courses, horticulture education, and expanded staffing, the district is focused on providing comprehensive support for students across all grade levels.
“We are committed to giving every student the tools they need to succeed—academically, socially, and personally,” Dr. Fitzpatrick said. “These new initiatives reflect our district’s focus on preparing students not only for the classroom, but also for life beyond our walls.”
